The sun had set, which was convenient as the tunnels didn’t run this far out of the centre of town. Cedric and Tobias caught a cab to the address Camille had written down, climbing out in an entirely unfamiliar area. Perhaps Cedric had been here more frequently in the last six years, but from the look on his face, Tobias assumed not.

On each side of the road, a wall of grimy windows extended up into the sky. Fire escapes zigzagged down the sides and stopped one storey up, metal snakes ending in coiled-in tails. Red brick had seen many better days, and dumpsters were filled to the brim with what could be trash, or could be bodies. From the smell, Tobias would never be sure.

Tobias resolved himself to not breathing until they left this area of town.

Cedric straightened his jacket lapels and cuffs—a gesture Tobias usually associated with his brother going into battle—and nodded. He gritted his teeth and marched towards the front door.

Tobias followed, considering the times when they, too, had lived in places like this. It had been a long time, and truthfully they’d lived in much worse. Underground hovels before the invention of UV protected glass, light-tight basements for during the day and only using the rest of the house at night.

Francesca had never been in the ruling class, but he had to admit, he had not expected to find her in somewhere like this.

After checking that nobody was watching, they took the stairs at speed up to the fifth floor. Lines of uniformed doors spanned the length of the corridor, nothing but little brass numbers to tell them apart. Cedric set off in the increasing number direction, counting his way along. He stopped just before they reached their destination, number 523. He held out a hand to stop Tobias behind him, and pointed.

The door opposite 522 and—Tobias checked behind him—next to 521 stood open. There was a long fresh split in the frame, the wood visible beneath peeling paint.

Tobias slipped past his brother and braced himself. He walked into the apartment.

The apartment was close to barren, but what was inside was broken or discarded. A ripped armchair was on its side, a small collection of broken crockery sprayed across the small open kitchen. A medical kit stood on the counter, its contents upended.

Clothes were strewn across a single bedroom, half-obscuring a long slash through the mattress. There were even cuts in the cheap linoleum floor.

Tobias glanced at Cedric and frowned. He would need to break his promise to Camille Harrison that her friend would remain unharmed. True, it had not been by their hand, but he highly doubted this Bria witch had simply gone out, or would be returning any time soon.

“See if you can find anything,” Tobias said quietly. “I’m going to knock and see if neighbours heard anything.”

“You think they’d tell you if they did?”

“Perhaps not, but worth a shot.”

Cedric nodded and brushed some glass aside with the toe of his shoe, peering around him for where to start.
